MORE INFO :  Each hand-painted piece contains alternating layers of glass and paint. Once cured, the small 3 dimensional painting is heated up and encased in molten glass.  Because the ultimate shape of the vase is given by Harry, after the imagery is applied, the painting gets expanded along with the glass and the final imagery is a bit unpredictable.  Sometimes in fact, the paintings are much more interesting than they otherwise would have been.  It's probably my background with pottery glazes that makes me comfortable with this approach.
